Last week I participated in the Art of Wedding Bridal Show at the Gerding Theater; it was a perfect opportunity to introduce a few whimsical bridal bouquets. Inspired by ideas in european design books that I bought during my last trip back home, I sparingly incorporated new elements: sisal, a natural fiber, along with a variety of decorative wires, a few pearls and feathers. Et voilà! what fun it was to patiently add a new set of details in bouquets!

Create an eye-catching textural wreath , which will provide a classic welcome at the door – or a beautifully seasonal centerpiece. You’ll use materials which reflect the abundance of the Pacific Northwest landscape: rough bark, cushiony moss, lichen-encrusted twigs, bright berries, and small fruit from apple and pear trees.

Texture is the visual or tactile surface and appearance of something….. I revel in it and love to juxtapose unexpected combinations of colors and shapes – Mother Nature is *the* ideal source for inspiration!
These arrangements were made in long, very narrow vases; it was a blast to decorate them with foliage, berries, mushrooms, bark and lichens to incorporate the vessels in the design.

A woodland theme was exactly what Brigett was looking for! On their way from Boise to the coast, she and her family stopped by and gathered her bouquet, other personal flowers as well as textured moss spheres for the aisle. Photographer Nathan Cordova documented their wedding beautifully!

Clear, sunny weather was delightful on Jannette and Charlie’s wedding day! The ceremony took place in the quaint chapel at Camp Colton and the rustic reception hall was fabulous for the reception. Rebecca Dryer captured all the beauty and joy of the day perfectly.
Jannette’s parents, who own a nursery, provided lots of birch branches which were incorporated in the centerpieces and the altar arrangements. A great special touch!

Jannette’s favorite flower: orange ranunculus!

Woven flax leaves inside a vase is a very time consuming project, but the result is worth it!

The yellow, red and orange veins in croton foliage make these leaves a great choice to cover containers with.

For the last couple of years log arrangements and woodland bouquets have captivated my attention. Maybe it’s because they are rooted in a childhood memory, that popped up out of nowhere a couple of years ago:
I grew up in Belgium. My parents were avid hikers and for 4 consecutive summers we spent a month in Switzerland, where we went on daily hikes. Every year we went to a different area of this gorgeous country that is nestled in the Alps. Getting to our destination was a fun adventure of train rides!
Every day, dad mapped out another day hike while mom packed our lunches and off we went. Whenever possible we would stop by a creek for a lunch break; the 4 kids loved to explore the meadows and we always had so much fun gathering pieces of bark, moss and wildflowers to delight mom with an arrangement!
Bark, branches, moss, lichen, seedpods, herbs, river rock, lots of texture and sometimes a few flowers: a fabulous recipe for the woodland arrangements that I have had so much fun with lately.
My friend Joni has photographed many of them; her incredible pictures always illustrate the many details that make these old pieces of wood come alive!
