Workshop in Australia – Day 2

The 2 weeks  in Australia have been quite the whirlwind, and Holly and I  have been back home for a week already.  Now it is time to catch up on some posts to document this wonderful trip!

The day after we arrived in Sydney we went bright and early to the fabulous flower market. It was very busy there! Florists were waiting at the door to get in.   Even though the winter was around the corner, the selection was fantastic and it was such a feast to see endless varieties of native plants, such as grevilleas and proteas and so many varieties of eucalyptus pods.

After buying lots of flowers for the workshop we headed to the flower  farm Jonima where owner Ingrid gave us a wonderful tour. In the greenhouse she and her husband grow thousands of gerbera daisies – their bread and butter as she calls it. And in the fields it is an explosion of native shrubs, perennials and annuals.

We also walked through the forested area and I found lots of fabulous bark for the woodland class.

Thank you Michelle for the great pictures!

Workshop in Australia – Day 1

What an incredible adventure this has been so far!

Last Sunday Holly Chapple and I met at the airport in San Francisco and flew out to Sydney where we were so warmly received by Michelle Van Eimeren and her assistant Linda . I met Michelle in March 2013 at the Chapel Designers Conference in New York and we hit it off! The prospect of spending 2 weeks with her and Holly was thrilling!

We arrived in Sydney at 6:30 am on Tuesday, and later that morning we went to Apack, a wholesaler that sells supplies – or sundries as they call it here. The rest of the afternoon we visited with Craigio Scott at East Coast Wildflower Farm and with Barry and Robert Luff at their flower farm in Kulnura. The local flora is incredibly stunning and gorgeous! and even though winter is about to start, there was still so much blooming in the fields.

Thank you Michelle for taking the great pictures!

Woodland Workshop at Studio Choo

Earlier this month I had the wonderful opportunity to teach a couple of classes at the fabulous  Studio Choo in San Francisco. What a perfect space to teach classes! It was great to meet Jill Rizzo, one of the owners and Katie, the manager at the studio as well as a couple of interns.

The sold out class was attended by very talented designers who enjoyed designing with such a wide variety of textures and woodland findings.

A huge thank you to Norah Hoover with Norahphoto , who documented the woodland class in the morning.

Much gratitude to Studio Choo for this opportunity and many thanks to Sheryl Tynes with Thistle and Bone for taking me to the flower market, assisting at the workshop and for being a fantastic hostess!

Botanical Couture on Art Beat

When I found out in February that Art Beat – a favorite OPB weekly program – was going to do a story on a botanical couture photo shoot that was planned with photographer Ted Mishima and model Amanda Hathaway, I was absolutely thrilled! Working with producer Katrina Sarson, along with the videographer and sound person was a great experience. Magically, they put me at ease – because of course I was nervous! They came to the studio the day before the shoot  to film some hands-on design. The next day we all met at a photo studio.

Thank you Ted, Amanda and stylist Katherine Sealy with Events Cosmetics for this wonderful collaboration!

Much gratitude to Katrina and her team for making this happen!
