Fritillaria!
Thursday, April 18th, 2013Such a favorite!!!
Checkered lily is a bulbous perennial that is native to river flood plains in Europe where it is frequently seen growing in large colonies. Plants are somewhat dainty in appearance, featuring solitary (less frequently 2-3), drooping, 2” long, bell-shaped flowers which are checkered and veined with reddish-brown, purple, white and gray atop slender stems growing to 15” tall. Blooms in April. Linear, lance-shaped, grass-like green leaves are widely-spaced on the stems (Missouri Botanical Garden)

Wedding/Event Workshop in Los Angeles (Day 1)
Monday, April 1st, 2013Lori Eschler Frystack with Blossom Alliance had invited me to teach a wedding/event workshop in her studio in Los Angeles. The experience was fantastic!
She took me bright and early (at 2am) to the flower market on Monday morning, so we could pick the best from the most abundant selection of flowers. I had a hard time grasping the magnitude of that place filled with flowers, plants and hard goods from dozens wholesalers and local growers. By 6:30am we headed back home, with loads of flowers, textures, houseplants and succulents.
On Tuesday Leslie, Kate, Becky and Tara joined us. We discussed business issues the first hour and then the real fun started: after sharing lots of ideas, mechanics and techniques, everyone made a woodland centerpiece. In the afternoon it was time to experiment with a different type of centerpiece.
Thank you Lori for all the pictures!
Feast your eyes!
Woodland Workshop on May 20, 21 & 22
Friday, March 29th, 2013Explore the many possibilities the woodlands have to offer and be inspired by the botanical treasures of the Pacific Northwest! Françoise’s absolute love for this style of arrangement stems from her time spent as a child in Switzerland. Foraging for a piece of wood or bark and moss and adding some wildflowers, she would make arrangements for her Mother while on summer hikes with her family in the Alps. Her woodland fairy creations have since bloomed into unique centerpieces and bouquets using the foliage of the Northwest as her muse. Detail is paramount in these layered, intricate creations. Gather ideas to express your creativity and learn to work with woodland materials found in nature!
Woodland Workshops are intensive and inspiring, providing insights and techniques developed over many years of European floral design. Classes begin with a lecture and presentation, where your input and questions are welcomed.
After a demonstration of floral techniques and mechanics, you will design your own pieces. You will hone your artistic talents, and will be encouraged to listen to your intuition and further your own vision. Classes are limited to five students to ensure valuable individual attention.
Dates: Monday May 20, Tuesday May 21, Wednesday May 22
Time: 9am til 4pm (1 hour lunch break)
Where: At Françoise’s Studio
Cost: $1,300 – A 50% deposit is requested to reserve your space; the balance is due May 6.

Hellebore!
Thursday, March 7th, 2013Hellebore are a true treasure in winter and early spring gardens. They bloom for months and just like hydrangeas, they change colors as they mature. They also are a fabulous cut flower!

Thursday, April 4th Sculptural Beginnings
For Françoise, the Woodlands sprouted from a childhood memory that took a life of its own. A piece of bark, a log, driftwood, a wooden disk, branches, and root balls can all become bases of the unique structures we will create. Learn to use moss and bark to cover containers that serve as the foundation for centerpieces or larger arrangements. We’ll discuss color, texture, form, ideas and techniques.
Friday, April 5th Woodland Weddings
The Northwest is a host of a very rich and lush forest life, which lends itself to stunning arrangements. Using interesting foliage, bark, berries, seedpods, twigs, mushrooms, herbs and some flowers, we'll explore how to make woodland bouquets, boutonniers and corsages as well as arrangement for ceremonies. Come up with your own inspiration to use nature and all of its bounty in lieu of traditional flowers.
